The growing challenges of data complexity, availability and uncertainty vary according to the E, D&P stages. This research theme addresses these challenges by focusing on R&D of:

Interactive data modelling (i.e. techniques for visually constructing and editing the geometry and topology of 2D and 3D reservoir models) and knowledge representation (i.e. techniques to visually encode interpretive and analytical reasoning in the reservoir data modelling process), both facilitated by interactive visual interfaces.

Scalable data management frameworks, handling the exponential increase in the volume of industry data, enabling information handling and analysis via different modalities, spatial densities and scales.

Rapid Reservoir Modeling (RRM) Interactive Prototyping of Reservoir Geology & Dynamics --
Joint Industry Project
Integration of reservoir modelling and characterization with automated analysis of essential dynamic patterns (e.g. flow, mechanics and seismics), facilitated by interactive modeling, visualization and analytics interfaces. Sketch-based Interfaces for Interpretive Modeling & Exploratory Visualization of E, D&P Data.
Sketch-based Interfaces and Modeling (SBIM) techniques can be applied to create 2D and 3D digital models, augment existing digital models by adding geometric detail, and use the input sketches for user interface operations. The sketch-modeling paradigm enables a more natural, faster, interactive and interpretive modelling and exploratory visualization of data from different E, D&P stages (
Fig. 1 and Fig. 2) using sketches extracted directly from user input. Selected case-studies from our group include seismic interpretation, geological modeling from 2D maps, stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) reconstruction from microseismic data modeling from microseismic data, and feature extraction and modeling from outcrop analogues.
