In the oil and gas industry, it is necessary to communicate with an assorted group of individuals who are involved in different stages of E, D&P and decision-making. Geologists, geophysicists, engineers, business and project managers, accountants and public relations individuals as well as many others are involved. All of these individuals need an effective process to share information with each other.
The challenge is to determine the appropriate visual interaction and representation of the information for the user, their experience and their role/task. The nature of interactions (e.g. collaborative, remote interactions etc.) also demands the need for using various technologies that can better suit the task needs. We focus on R&D of novel user interaction techniques and technologies to address these challenges.
Selected Projects w/ RT-3 as the primary Research Theme
Tabletop & Mobile Interactions: in this research, we harness the power of multi-touch tables and mobile devices, providing a new interaction paradigm by facilitating collaborative manipulation and analysis of reservoirs. Case studies involve reservoir post-processing simulation, outcrop analogues from LiDAR data, and hydrocarbon microseep data.
Tangible Interfaces (TUI): in this research, we present the use of TUIs that explore the inherent spatiality of the 3D reservoirs. Case studies involve microseismic data, well planning for reservoir engineering, and remote exploratory visualization.
Immersive Interactions: in this research we present the use of mixed and augmented reality to explore reservoir datasets, by integrating in situ observations with/ digital data. Case studies involve reservoir post-processing simulation, well planning, and remote exploratory visualization.
